There's a lot a free, demo, and shareware out there.  Here is the stuff I always put on my PCs:

Winzip is the most popular archive utility.  This lets you unpack or make ".ZIP" archives. Go to Home Page
Lview is a very popular graphic viewing, editing and printing program It has the ability to create web photo galleries and a lot of little extras.  The shareware version has changed to a limited 21-day demo, but it's still worth trying. If you're looking for free, try Irfanview. Go to Home Page
WS_FTP Lite is one of the most popular FTP clients around.  It remains to be my one of my favorite FTP clients.  I also like a newer program called SmartFTP. Go to Home Page
Acrobat Reader is a very popular reader/viewer for documents in the .PDF format.  A must have, but it seems it's not as stable as it used to be...  That's my opinion. Go to Home Page
Prfile is a postscript print utility.  It allows you to directly print postscript and binary format printer files.  It's rare to have to print direct postscript files any more, but if you need it... Go to Home Page

MacroAngel (formally Winscheduler) lets you automate tasks.  More than just a scheduler, it can record and play back a sequence of events! Go to Home Page
The Microsoft Excel Viewer lets you read and print Excel spreadsheets without having to purchase or use Microsoft Office! Go to Home Page
The Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer lets you read and print PowerPoint presentations without having to purchase or use Microsoft Office! Go to Home Page
Printkey let's you capture screens or portions of screens and send to a printer or file.  I've also come to like a newer (free) program called Screenseize from PC Magazine. Go to Home Page
Diskdata let's you see in charts and graphs how much space is used by various files and folders on your system.   I've also come to like a newer (free) program called DiskPie2 from PC Magazine. Go to Home Page
PC Magazine has tons of free utilities for download (as you can see by the previous entries).  Another jewel on their site is EndItAll, a nifty utility that will shut down all but the essential programs and processes on your computer.  It's great for troubleshooting and getting extra performance for games!
